How we research and score EV chargers

We'd rather tell you exactly how our recommendations are made than imply something they aren't. Here's the process behind every guide, review and calculator on EV Charger Guide.

What we do (and don't do)

EV Charger Guide is a research-based buyer's guide. We don't run a lab, and our reviews are not hands-on tests. Instead, for every charger we:

  • Start from the manufacturer's spec sheet: rated amperage, power at 240 V, cable length, connector options, install type, weather rating, warranty.
  • Cross-check with independent reviews from publications that do test hands-on (InsideEVs, MotorTrend, EnergySage, State of Charge), and note where their results differ from the marketing claims.
  • Read owner reports (forums, retailer reviews, support threads) for the problems that only show up after months of use: Wi-Fi dropouts, app regressions, stiff cables in winter, support response times.
  • Flag uncertainty. When a spec can't be confirmed, or sources disagree, we say so rather than guess. Spec notes on each review page mark exactly what's provisional.

Each review page lists the sources we relied on.

How the 10-point score works

Every charger gets four sub-scores, each out of 10:

  • Charging power: rated amperage and kW, adjusted for whether the power is usable (hardwired 48 A beats plug-in 40 A, but both beat 32 A).
  • Smart features: scheduling, energy monitoring, load management, app quality and connectivity — weighted by what owners actually use.
  • Value: typical street price against what you get, including warranty and support reputation.
  • Install flexibility: plug-in vs hardwired options, connector choice (NACS/J1772/dual), and how many homes it fits.

The overall score is a weighted blend of the four, rounded to one decimal, plus small adjustments for reliability and support reputation. A 9+ is exceptional, 8–9 is a strong buy for the right garage, and under 7.5 means real compromises.

A higher score doesn't mean it's the right charger for you. A 9.2 dual-connector flagship is a bad buy if you rent and can't hardwire. That's why we built the charge time calculator and the panel capacity checker.

Prices

Prices are typical US street prices at the time of our last update and are shown as ranges because EV chargers are discounted heavily and often. Amazon Associates rules also mean we show price bands rather than exact live prices. Always check the current price on the retailer page.

Affiliate links and independence

EV Charger Guide is reader-supported. As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases made through our links, at no extra cost to you. Commissions never decide which products we recommend or how they are ranked. Brands cannot pay for placement, and we don't accept free products in exchange for coverage.

Updates and corrections

We review our main buying guides regularly and whenever a significant charger launches or a connector lineup changes. Each page shows its last-updated date. Spot an error? Tell us and we'll fix it.
